Q:
I am searching for scripture that clarifies once saved always saved.
I know this is a hard concept. I was not raised on once saved always
saved. But I am trying to understand why so many believe it? thanks.
A: Dear Friend: Your question has made me ponder the wonderful
gift of salvation we have in Christ! And that since it is a gift...
it cannot be received by anything we do nor can it be maintained
by anything we do!
Of course, one has to be a Christian in order to obtain this standing
before God. See my article on Faith and
read How to Know God Personally if you are
uncertain about whether you are a Christian.
These verses come to mind when pondering the "Once saved, always
saved" question:
Eph 4:29-30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom
you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Eph 1:12-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed,
you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who
is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of
those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory.
John 10:26-30 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they
follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish;
no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given
them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my
Father's hand.
Rom 8:37-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will
be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus
our Lord. NIV
These scriptures declare that once we are saved nothing can snatch
us out of Christ's hand OR His Father's hand; that once we are saved
the Holy Spirit indwells us, seals us and guarantees our salvation
until the day Christ returns for us; that no power... death, demons,
angels nor anything in all creation can separate us from God and
His love once we become believers. And since Christ's death on the
cross has completely cleansed us from all sin, past, present and
future... then, there is "no condemnation for those who are in Christ
Jesus" (Rom. 8:1-2).
What a blessing it is to stand on promises of God and be assured
that because salvation is totally from Him, through Him and by Him
and can only be received as a gift by us from Him.... we are securely
on the road to heaven, totally forgiven and being made like Him.
Yes, there are those who backslide and fall into sin and we sin
every day and that is why we are told to confess those sins as 1
John 1:9 says: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
In I Corinthians Paul writes about backslidden believers- that though
they have no works which are worthy of a reward- that they, themselves,
will be saved:
1 Cor 3:12-15 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver,
costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what
it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed
with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it
is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved,
but only as one escaping through the flames.
Praise God for the wonderful gift of salvation, that it is free
through faith based on the grace of God in Christ. Praise God for
the wonderful inheritance we have in Christ!

Can
a Saved Person Ever be Lost?
Once Saved, Always Safe by Pastor
Ray Pritchard
Two weeks ago a man stopped me on Sunday morning with a theological
question. The man is a friend and an occasional attender. He put his
question rather more bluntly than I expected. "You don't believe that
"Once Saved, Always Saved" baloney, do you?"
As a matter of fact, I do. And so does Calvary Memorial Church.
For the uninitiated, "Once Saved, Always Saved" is street talk for
the belief that is called (in more formal settings) Eternal Security.
It is the belief those who are truly born again through personal faith
in Jesus Christ can never lose their salvation. If you are saved,
you are saved forever. Once you are saved by Jesus, he keeps you saved
forever.
Calvary Memorial Church has always believed in eternal security. A
check of our old constitutions (going all the way back to the first
one in 1915) shows that we have stated our belief in eternity security
in very strong terms. To us it is no small doctrine. We believe the
Bible teaches it, and teaches it very clearly.
In our current constitutional revision, we have actually strengthened
this part of our doctrinal statement. Section J of the Articles of
Faith is entitled "The Security of the Believer," and reads as follows:
"We believe the Scriptures teach that Jesus Christ, by His life, death
and resurrection has conquered the dominion of sin, and therefore
all who by faith have been united to Christ, who have been justified
by God's grace, and who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit cannot
re-enter the dominion of sin nor lose their place in the kingdom of
God." We offer as supporting Scriptures John 6:39; John 10:27-29;
Romans 11:29; Philippians 1:6; I Peter 1:3-5; I John 2:19.
What does it mean? It means that your salvation does not ultimately
depend upon you. Salvation is work of God's grace from beginning to
end. Even the faith you exercise is ultimately a gift of God.
Your salvation rests upon three things:
1. Your union with Christ,
2.Your justification by God's grace, and
3. Your regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
Do you see the Trinitarian emphasis? All three divine Persons are
intimately involved in your salvation. The Father justifies, the Son
unites, and the Holy Spirit regenerates. What the Father starts, the
Son continues, and the Holy Spirit insures.
Where do good works come in? Good works are the result and visible
evidence of salvation. They are not the ground of salvation. Does
this suggest that you can accept Christ and then live like the devil
(as some have falsely implied)? No, not at all. It's true that all
of us fall short of God's ideal. It is also true that God's children
sometimes fall into grievous sin. Those who do face the chastisement
of their Heavenly Father. But they do not lose their salvation. You
don't gain salvation by being good, nor do you lose it by being bad.
When we get to heaven, we will all be shocked to discover how sinful
we really were and how great the grace of God really is. Those whom
God saves, he saves forever. And that's no baloney.
